Liège Airport main runway now always open in reduced visibility conditions
The Instrument Landing System (ILS) on runway 22L at Liège Airport is now operational in Category III, enabling aircraft to land safely even in the event of severely reduced visibility.

Belgocontrol secured more than one million flight movements in 2017
1,073,870: this is the total number of movements that was secured by Belgocontrol air traffic controllers in the Belgian airspace and at Belgian airports in 2017. This is an increase of more than 3% compared to last year. For the Belgian airports alone, more than 33 million passengers and nearly 1.3 million tonnes of cargo were safely transported last year, which is an all-time high. In terms of incidents, Belgocontrol records outstanding results again.

Belgocontrol: increased preferential runway use at Brussels Airport in 2017
Belgocontrol draws the balance of last year’s runway use at Brussels Airport. In 2017 the company could secure 85% of movements at the airport being performed at the three preferential runways (25R, 25L and 19). In 15% of cases, the air traffic controllers had to use alternative runway configurations in order to guarantee the safety of air traffic. It is the first time in fifteen years the number of landings on runway 01 has been that low.

As from today, Johan Decuyper chairs the CEO board of FABEC, the functional airspace block comprising Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France and Switzerland in the framework of the Single European Sky. Belgocontrol and Entry Point North enter into joint venture focussed on training
Belgocontrol organizes its own staff training, including the one to become an air traffic controller. For organizing its training sessions, the Belgian air navigation service provider will enter into a joint venture with Entry Point North, one of the largest Air Traffic Services academies worldwide. That co-operation will ensure that Belgocontrol staff are provided with the necessary training until at least 2025.

Automatic measuring of upper wind: Belgocontrol enhances security of approaches at Brussels Airport
Too strong a tailwind at high altitude can lead to an aircraft’s non-stabilized approach and can provoke a missed approach with overshoot (go-around procedure). In order to limit that risk Belgocontrol has developed a new tool that informs pilots and air traffic controllers on upper winds.
